DISTEMPERS

Acrylic Distemper Before Dashain: A Brighter Home Without a Full Repaint

Dashain is close. If a full premium paint job is not possible, acrylic distemper can still freshen interior rooms — and lighter colours make them feel brighter.

Dashain (Dasai) and Durga Puja are only days away. Many homes in Eastern India still want a fresher look, but there is no time for a full premium paint job.

Acrylic distemper is the practical answer for that. It is made for interior walls, costs less than premium emulsion, and a couple of coats can brighten a room before guests arrive.

Use it where it fits. Do not use it as a shortcut on every surface.

Where acrylic distemper works well

  • Bedrooms
  • Extra rooms and stores
  • Rental flats
  • Ceilings and low-traffic walls
  • Rooms that only need a fresher look this season

It gives a matte finish. Small marks and uneven patches show less than on a high-sheen paint.

A simple split works well before Dashain:

  • Living room and main walls → Premium Emulsion
  • Bedrooms and extra rooms → Acrylic Distemper

How lighter colours brighten a room

After the monsoon, many rooms feel dull even when they are clean. A lighter wall colour reflects more daylight and makes the space feel larger.

For Eastern Indian homes, these directions work well indoors:

  • Soft whites and warm creams for bedrooms
  • Light greys and greige where you want a calm look
  • A slightly warmer shade on the wall that gets less sun

Very dark colours on all four walls make a small room feel smaller. If you want depth, keep three walls light and use a deeper colour on one wall only.

How to apply it

  1. Clean dust, cobwebs and loose old paint
  2. Fill cracks
  3. If the wall is bare or very porous, apply interior cement primer and let it dry
  4. Apply 2 coats of acrylic distemper
  5. Allow proper drying between coats

What not to do

  • Do not use acrylic distemper on exterior walls
  • Do not use it on doors, windows or metal — those need enamel
  • Do not skip cleaning. Dust under the coat shows up as soon as the room is lit for Dashain
