Paint Doors, Windows and Grills Before Dashain: Enamel That Lasts in Eastern India

Walls get most of the attention before Dashain and Durga Puja. Doors, windows, gates and grills are usually left for last — and that is where rust, peeling and dull wood show first.

Across Eastern India — the plains of North Bengal, the hills of Sikkim and Darjeeling, and neighbouring humid districts — monsoon moisture sits on metal and wood for months. If you put enamel on bare iron, or skip primer on old wood, the finish starts failing before winter.

Do this job in the right order, with the right primer.

What needs enamel (not wall paint)

Wall emulsion is for plaster. Do not use it on:

• Wooden doors and window frames
• Metal gates, grills, railings and window bars
• MS / iron furniture and downpipes

These need enamel. It forms a hard, washable film that handles rain, sun and daily touch.

Metal: primer first, then enamel

Bare or rusty metal will not hold enamel on its own.

1. Wire-brush loose rust and old flaking paint
2. Wipe dust and oil
3. Apply red oxide metal primer and let it dry fully
4. Apply 2 coats of HiGloss Enamel

Wood: seal, then enamel

Doors in this climate often have open grain and trapped moisture, especially after a long monsoon.

1. Sand and remove loose paint
2. Fill cracks
3. Apply wood primer and let it dry
4. Apply 2 coats of HiGloss Enamel

Suggested order before the festival

Do metal and wood **after** exterior walls (so dust does not settle on wet enamel), but **before** the last interior clean-up.
